As a follow up to my last post, I thought I'd share my thoughts on what shouldn't have made the Uncut 150.
By far the biggest problem is the ass-kissing given to Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Between them, they account for 5 albums in the list. I might let "Love and Theft" go, but the rest simply don't deserve to be there. "Chrome Dreams II" is worse than "sprawling" , it's unfocused and hobbled together. (Oddly, I prefer the low-key "Fork in the Road", which didn't make the list, presumably as it sounds too throw-away.) I won't even start on "Modern Times". Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Young and Dylan but there's no way all 5 of those albums should be there.
A similar affliction affects all the Jack White inclusions (Uncut's Man of the Decade). Again, I'm a big fan, but surely I'm not the only one who thinks "Get Behind Me Satan" should be resigned to the same dustbin as "Their Satanic Majesties Request"? At least Jack White deserves inclusion, just not 8 times!
Finally, why does everyone love the Robert Plant and Alison Krauss album "Rising Sands"? Sounds over-produced, sickly-sentimental and souless to me.
On a more positive note, my next post will be a list of the albums which were included and I think deserve special mention.
